In a press conference held by Miguel Carabaguiaz, director of the Costa Rican Railroad Institute (Incofer), the train service from downtown San Jose to the province of Heredia was officially confirmed.
The Incofer had to confront a number of obstacles in order to reactivate this important route between two of the most important and populated provinces in the Central Valley. The start date had to be set back a couple of times due to several details the institute had to take care of at the last minute.
The train service between these two points has been anxiously awaited by hundreds of people as it will provide a much quicker travel time between both provinces and will hopefully alleviate the heavy traffic build up during rush hour.
The train service will cover a total of 10 kilometers in less than 30 minutes with five official stations. The main station in San Jose is the Atlantic Train Station located in San Jose’s eastern part while the official train station in Heredia is the San Francisco de Heredia station. The other train stops will be at Cuatro Reinas in Tibas, Santa Rosa in La Valencia and Miraflores in Heredia.
Tickets will cost 350 colones ({content}.60) each way no matter which train station you will be traveling to and from. Each train has a capacity of 230 passengers and will depart every 30 minutes. Trains will operate from 6:00am to 8:30am and from 4:30pm to 8:00pm.
The Railroad Institute is planning on reactivating all railroads in the country that were shut down by former president Jose Maria Figueres Ferrer in the early 90’s. The Incofer also has teamed up with a local tour operator that offers train rides to the port of Puntarenas in the Central Pacific Coast as a tourist attraction.
Puntarenas has always been Costa Rica’s most important port in the Pacific Coast attracting thousands of local and foreign tourists. Costa Rica hotels in the nearby area can be easily found at very comfortable rates year round.
