The fishing the past week has been about average our of the Los Suenos Marina. The billfish bite has been a little disappointing compared to last year but people are still catching fish. The boats going down to the 26 rock have been getting mahi mahi, small tuna and some bottom fish. The boats going offshore have been getting some mahi mahi, tuna and a sailfish or two. The guys going bottom fishing have been doing good on smaller grouper and snapper.

We all think the late arrival of Hurricane Ida may have pushed back the billfishing a few weeks so look for December to be a good month.

Turkey, stuffing, pumpkin pie, cocktails and football on tap for today….fishing tomorrow.

Spent on a day on the Monkey Business with Capt Marciel mate Chente and friends Freddie, lilian and Jahaira. Made it out about 13 miles when we got the call that the water outside was gone so we headed back in a little and deployed the Marlin Star Tomahawk and the Squidnation Teasers. The Tomahawk struck first and raised a sail on the left long teaser.

Capt Marciel had the boys from the Canadian Sportfishing show out today and they had a great day. The sailfish bite was strong raising 16 sails to the Squidnation Teasers getting 10 bites and releasing 8 sailfish. December 13, 2009 – gone tarpon fishing

Some friends and I are getting out of town for a quick tarpon and snook trip the next 3 days. We are heading up to the same area I fished a month ago and have described in the fishing reports at the bottom of the page. My goal this trip is to get a tarpon on a circle hook with dead ballyhoo. Everyone uses Rapalas up there but I hate all the hooks and attached to a 150 pound tarpon it can be dangerous. Circle hooks work better and are much better for the health of the fish…I just hope they work.

The offshore fishing here has been amazing for mahi mahi. Several old timers told me they have never seen the mahi mahi so thick. Boats going 30 plus miles out are catching all the mahi mahi they can handle as well as a few sailfish each day and there have also been some marlin caught.

I will have net access from Nicaragua and will try and update the fishing reports.

December 10, 2009 – Costa Rica fishing

The fishing the past few days out of the Los Suenos marina has improved for sailfish. The boats going offshore are still catching lots of mahi mahi and the past few days they have been catching more sailfish. The hot bite today was 35 to 40 miles out and there were lots of mahi mahi and everyone caught a handful of sailfish. Most of the boats out there were private boats but a couple charter boats made it out there.

The guys on the 28′ Carolina Classic took 1 angler out for a full day offshore and they caught a dozen mahi mahi all in the 30 pound range and 4 sailfish over 100 pounds. The mahi mahi were so thick they had 6 on at the same time. The angler flubbed a cast and it landed 5 feet behind the boat and he still caught a mahi mahi.

Another captain told me they mahi were so thick they had to drive away from them because they were running out of ballyhoo and still wanted to catch sailfish. They ended the day with 20 mahi mahi and 3 sailfish.

It’s full summertime down here with 90 degree weather and flat seas. I’m from Omaha and it was minus 11 degrees there this morning so I count my blessings everyday that I am in Costa Rica and not shoveling and scraping my way through a Nebraska winter. If you are somewhere cold come visit Costa Rica for some hot weather and great fishing.

December 3, 2009 – Costa Rica fishing

The fishing the past week out of Los Suenos seems to be on a upswing.

A couple of the 42′ went out past 35 miles and one boat caught a marlin, 8 sailfish, 3 mahi mahi and a 150 pound tuna. The other 42′ caught a marlin, 5 sailfish, 7 mahi mahi and 3 nice tuna.

The guys on the 38′ custom went 30 miles out yesterday and caught a dozen nice mahi mahi in the 40 pound range and 2 sailfish.

The fish are out there…they are just a little out of range for some of the smaller charter boats. As the weather and water improves they should start moving in.

I talked to captains up and down the coast this week and everyone is waiting on the billfish…it shouldn’t be long now.

The photos above are from a group last week that fished Quepos one day and Los Suenos one day. They didn’t catch a bunch of fish but still had a great time. The bottom pic is great.
