Guatemala Report – Black Marlin Release

Captain Joe Riley reports that he and the Sherman group of 4 had an exciting day of fly fishing on board the Perla Del Mare. After raising a few sails to the teasers they ended up 3 for 4. To top off the day the Perla raised a Black Marlin. They hooked, fought and released the approximately 350 lb fish on conventional tackle within 10 minutes. Lets hope there luck…

We returned from Panama on supper bowl Sun.Fished five days at Aqua Adventures.We fished most of the time in Costa Rica,and one day a hannibal bank.We had no luck with marlin,but did real well with Tuna in size if not numbers.Fish were 300,225 and167#.there was a great marlin bite at Tropic Star that week 95 marlin for 12 boats.

The hot bite the last few weeks has been south of the Los Suenos Marina but it seems to be moving back in our direction. The fishing yesterday out of Los Suenos was better than the day before and the boats were only running 30-35 miles instead of 40-45 miles…we hope that trend continues.

The biggest surprise is the steady marlin bite…there are still good numbers of blue marlin, black marlin and striped marlin in the area and many boats are getting a chance or two at marlin everyday. I heard yesterday that there were lots of boats with marlin releases and several with grand slams.

Happy Valentines Day…don’t forget.

The fishing the past few days out of the Los Suenos marina seems to be on an upswing. For the past couple weeks the best fishing has been about 40-50 miles south of Jaco in the Quepos area. Only the boats that can and will run 45 miles have been catching good numbers of fish. The past couple day the bite seems to have moved a little closer, hopefully that continues.

Captain Dave fished about 30 miles out yesterday and caught 7 sailfish, a striped marlin and a nice mahi mahi.

Captain James fished way south and got into a good bite…I heard they released more than a dozen sailfish.

Captain Rich fished way south and released 4 sailfish, missed a marlin and caught a mahi mahi for the grill.

Captain Jeremy caught a couple tuna, a couple sailfish and raised a marlin.

The photo above is courtesy Captain Chris on the Kinembe 2 in Quepos. He release two 500 plus pound black marlin and a nice blue marlin a few days ago.

Wes Bradshaw and his wife, fishing out from the Hilton Papagayo Resort on a half day inshore fishing at the nearby Punta de Palmares (here in Peninsula de Papagayo) on the Albatres boat caught 10 Bluefin tunas and a 15 pounds grouper.

The fishing out of the Los Suenos marina the past few days has been hit and miss. The boats having the most success are still running south 40 plus miles to fish. The boats that are fishing within 30 miles of Los Suenos are grinding it out and averaging 2 to 4 sailfish a day, a couple nice mahi mahi and maybe a marlin if they are lucky. The boats fishing 40-50 miles south of Los Suenos are making the long run and averaging 6-10 sailfish a day, a couple mahi mahi and maybe a marlin if they are lucky. The big news the past few days has been the bite about 80 ish miles south of Los Suenos. Lots of the big private boats packed their bags this week and made the run down south in the Drake Bay area. There are rumors of boats getting 30 plus sailfish bites per day as well as some big marlin numbers. I heard one boat went 7 for 14 on marlin…with a fly rod!

February fishing in Quepos remains phenomenal.

February has been fantastic for the lucky anglers fishing the Estrella de Mar out of Quepos, Costa Rica. Twelve days of fishing and the boat has raised 124 Sailfish, 8 Marlin, and a mixed bag of tuna, snapper, dorado and amberjack.

The fishing out of the Los Suenos marina seems to have improved the last couple days. The boats are not running as far and they are catching more sailfish.

Captain Dave had back to back days with 7 sailfish and 2 mahi mahi.

Captain Dana caught a couple sailfish, a mahi mahi and a 500 plus pound marlin.

Captain RJ caught 2 sails and a mahi mahi and 2 sails and a marlin on recent half day trips.

Captain Brandon took the boss for some bottom fishing and caught a 70 plus pound broomtail grouper,3 nice cubera snapper, a amberjack, a mahi mahi and about 9 small grouper.
